Artificial Lift Methods currently in use for heavy oil production.
Cold Primary Heavy Oil Production: There are a number of Progressing Cavity Pumps systems in operation for cold heavy oil production. The top drive systems can be electrically driven or hydraulically driven. Or a bottom drive Electric Submersible Progressing Cavity Pump system can be used. Various sizes and configuration of pump jacks can be used with Rod Insert or Tubing Pumps. Very limited application of Jet pump systems. Cold Heavy Oil Production With Sand (CHOPS) Top drive Progressing Cavity Pump systems are the preferred lift method of choice for operations involving the CHOPS recovery method. Cyclic Steam Stimulation (CSS or Huff & Puff) Due to the varying production rates and temperature ranges the preferred artificial lift method is to use Pump jacks with rod insert or tubing pumps. Steam Assisted Gravity Drainage (SAGD) The Hotline Electric Submersible Pump system is used in many low pressure SAGD projects. Other artificial lift methods include Pump jacks with Rod Insert or Tubing pumps. Also "poor boy" gas lift is also used to produce SAGD wells. The above mentioned artificial lift methods are methods that are currently in operation for commercial heavy oil projects. There are a number of heavy oil pilot projects that continue to experiment and test new ideas and concepts for artificial lift. Answer provided by Allan Peats |

Thank you for your answer. Which of these artificial lift methods are preferred for offshore production?

Offshore activities must consider some important factors like space and security... this factors affect the selection of secondary or tertiary recovery method for heavy oil reservoirs.
Methods like SAGD requires some space for the instalation of heaters and other infraestructure... Thai or In situ combustion methods aren`t applyable becouse it`s very dangerous... I think that best method for offshore production of heavy oil is intermitent diluent injection trought tubing... |
