World Heavy Oil Congress 2008
The 2008 World Heavy Oil Congress (WHOC), held March 10 –12 in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, welcomed over 900 congress delegates plus more than 1,000 attendees of the 3-day exhibition. This represented a record attendance since the first WHOC forum in Beijing, China, in 2006.
Keynote speakers at the opening ceremonies, held Sunday, March 9, included Mayor of Edmonton, Stephen Mandel; 2008 WHOC Chairman, Eric Newell; and 2006 WHOC Chairman and Vice President of CNPC, Zheng Hu. Over the next 3 days, Ministers, CEOs and experts from oil and gas organizations around the world addressed technology and innovation, supply and demand, security and sustainability. Presenters included senior executives of Suncor Energy, Total E&P, Shell, Statoil, Enbridge, Nexen Inc., Schlumberger, PDVSA, CNPC and Petrobras. A new feature to the Congress this year was a suite of technical tours that offered delegates the opportunity to meet with local businesses.
Keynote luncheon addresses were given each day, featuring Ed Stelmach, Premier of Alberta; Dr. Armando Zamora, Director General, ANH, Colombia; and Catherine Hughes, VP Oil Sands, Husky Energy Inc.
The 2009 World Heavy Oil Congress is planned to be held in Venezuela.
