Artificial lift systems for cyclics steam stimulation (CSS or Huff & Puff)

last modified 2007-06-19 12:09

The preferred AL method for CSS production, found in areas such as California and Alberta, is to use Pump Jacks with rod insert or tubing pumps. This is due to the highly varying production rates and temperature ranges involved over the stimulation cycle, typically lasting about one year. During a cycle, production can drop from about 100 m3 per day to just 2 m3/d. In some cases Variable Speed Drives (VSD’S) can be used to compensate for the varying production rates. These systems can handle high temperatures and moderate sand abrasion. Over time, the decrease in bottom-hole temperature (BHT) will cause the fluid viscosity to increase, which will ultimately lead to rod fall problems, marking the end of a cycle and the need for renewed steam stimulation.
