Victor Schmidt discusses the potential advantages of Vapor Extraction over SAGD and ongoing research evaluating its effectiveness.
While SAGD is highly effective in heavy oil production, it requires large quantities of fresh water and produces CO2 increasing GHG intensities. Vapex, which involves the injection of a mixture of gases to chemically lower heavy oil viscosities, is discussed as a possible alternative.
