Thermal simulation and economic evaluation of heavy oil
An SPE paper presenting the results and merits of thermal compositional simulation in heavy oil.
We have discussed the challenges and opportunity to better meet world-wide energy demand by extending our ability to develop and produce heavy oil economically through innovative technology.
Reservoir simulation and economics evaluation are important tools in the planning and optimization of heavy oil deposits such as those found in the Gulf of Mexico.
SPE104046 presented at last year’s First International Oil Conference and Exhibition in Mexico, presents a methodology to evaluate heavy-oil projects using cutting edge thermal compositional simulation and economic modeling. Different scenarios for costs, oil and gas prices and capital investment were analyzed and reported.
While this particular study was specific to the Gulf of Mexico marine environments, it is a good reference and framework that can be applied to other fields and underscores the importance of simulation in the planning and production of heavy oil reservoirs.
