The heavy oil reservoirs of the Campos Basin in Brazil are challenging to complete for a number of reasons including the lack of formation consolidation, low net to gross ratios, and a high degree of fines combined with low reservoir pressures and temperatures. SPE 112491 discusses an integrated approach to handling these challenges including accurate modeling of gravel placement, rat hole mitigation, and injection well clean-up.
A great example where technology and new approaches are enabling heavy oil production in very difficult conditions.
