JPT heavy oil section

JPT Online is featuring a technical article series on new heavy oil developments and research.

There is a new JPT Online heavy oil section featured in the recent April 2007 edition. The section is authored by Tony Kovscek, who is an associate professor of energy-resources engineering at Stanford University, where he directs the heavy-oil and unconventional resources group known as "SUPRI-A".

The featured section does a nice job summarizing the current challenges within the heavy oil industry such as moving beyond conventional thermal recovery in relatively shallow, homogenous sandstone formations to fractured carbonates, offshore environments, and deeper, more complex heavy oil reserves.

There are also technical references provided including one on the Grane field which we have featured in this blog as an example of heavy oil operations in geologically complex, offshore settings.
