SPE technical paper 108097-MS paper describes an innovative downhole fluid analysis technology (DFA) being used in Latin America for improved reservoir management that is applicable to both light and heavy oil reservoirs. New DFA technology essentially is a concept or approach vs. a specific tool and involves specialized fluid characterization based on near-infrared spectroscopy (NIR) for improving fluid sampling, reservoir compartmentalization evaluation and support flow assurance analysis.

One of the keys to success in heavy oil recovery is accurate fluid and reservoir characterization and DFA appears to be a promising new approach in heavy oil reservoir management.
