Hart E&P article on Norway's heavy oil Grane Field

last modified 2007-03-18 04:51

This Hart E&P article describes how Norsk Hydro used pre-planning and proven technology to optimize heavy oil recovery in their Grane field.

Norsk Hydro’s Grane field is the Norwegian North Sea’s heaviest oil field. Despite an average reservoir porosity of 33% with an average permeability of 5-10 Darcy, there are significant challenges in producing the 19 degree gravity oil. The article describes how Norsk Hydro used experience from the Troll and Oseberg fields to build a comprehensive reservoir management plan that includes the use of horizontal and smart well technology, 4D seismic to improve reservoir characterization, and permanently installed ocean-bottom cable/multicomponent seismic for continuous monitoring.

This is a great example of how a multi-disciplinary reservoir management approach combined with new and proven technologies can enable recovery in the most challenging heavy oil fields.
