Forty one conventional heavy oil research priorities
This PTAC publication outlines heavy oil research priorities for Canada's Alberta and Saskatchewan heavy oil operations.
As a follow-up to the previous post on directions in heavy oil research, I wanted to share a supplementary publication by PTAC prepared for Natural Resources Canada outlining 41 distinct research areas needed to economically expand conventional heavy oil production. The top 5 heavy oil research areas that were identified include the collection and utilization of methane, water influx, transportation and pipeline improvements, impact of intentionally producing sand, and ways to extend low energy primary production. Outside of expanding conventional heavy oil production, the research recommendations were also focused on lowering green house gas intensity including reduced methane venting, reduced emissions from the transportation of heavy oil production, and increasing the efficiency of fuel use in heavy oil operations.
